Preparing your Team for the Olympics 2012

The London 2012 Olympics is on it’s way and soon it will be upon us.

Whether you are based in the South East or in the Isle of Skye you as employers need to decide how to manage the Olympics period because the sooner you communicate your policies the better.

If organisations are savvy, the Olympics could be an effortless way to boost staff morale and employee engagement. For example, employers could provide a big screen to show main events (such as the opening/closing ceremonies) on key sites.

So here are our top tips for HR teams to think about prior to the Olympics:

Team Planning
Which teams might be particularly affected by the events and do you have a backup plan? Backup plans might be the sharing of responsibilities or training up staff to cover each other.

Business Hours
Will your organisations business hours change over this period? Longer trading hours might need more temporary workers to cover shifts

Contracts
Will your employment contracts allow the flexibility you need?

Reward
Will you offer some sort of incentive/bonus to teams to encourage longer and later shifts if the business needs it?

Flexi Working
Will you let teams have the opportunity to swap shifts to go home early to watch the events they are really interested in? Is unpaid leave an option or temporarily change their hours?

Annual Leave
Can you persuade employees to book any annual leave early to ensure that business needs over the olympic period can still be met?

Lateness
Will you loosen up on lateness? Transport could be a challenge during this period. There are going to be over 4 million extra people using London transport during the games which would put the existing infrastructure under strain
